Two Tone - The Exhibition

Thank you all for getting involved in this week's Two Tone Challenge, especially those of you who are away or have been in school all week. We have had all sorts of entries sent in - optical illusions, zentangles and a huge variety of patterns... all in glorious two tone. Well done all of you.

Click below to enter the exhibition movie. This week's soundtrack is an instrumental of a Ska Two Tone classic - A Message To Rudy by The Specials so you can dance as you watch!

Now scroll down below to find out more about this week's artists.

Kio - Kestrel

Kio starts this week's exhibition with a fantastic optical illusion. His picture tricks the eye into believing that you are seeing a 3D or floating sphere.

RuiBo - Magpie

RuiBo has also experimented with some very clever optical illusion effects. His lego character appears to be walking down a flight of steps. By careful shading, he has also achieved a great 3D effect with his number 5.

Jhael - Kittiwake

Jhael has created a superbly shaded two tone picture which tells a story and raises many questions, such as:
  • How did the fairy get into the light bulb? Did someone put her there, if so who?
  • Is the fairy trying to escape or has the butterfly just escaped?
  • How was the light bulb broken?
Senna - Magpie

In placing the bold simple shape of a star without outlining it, Senna has cleverly made it appear to float against her background of black and white stripes.

Max - Waxwing

Max has taken an everyday piece of fruit and turned it into a great two tone piece of art. He ensured that he stuck to a pattern of colouring the outside of the object the opposite of the inside.

Rayyan - Year 1

Rayyan has clearly been inspired by his current Underwater World topic, creating two 'fin-tastic' pictures. In his first he has really got the idea of colouring the stripes inside and outside the object in opposite ways. In his second picture he took the idea of using stripes for the middle of his turtle but then drew zentangle patterns around it, combining both ideas together.

RuiXuan - Grouse

RuiXuan really captured the true spirit of Two Tone with this fabulous checkerboard effect picture. It looks a little like you are looking at the apple through a magnifying glass but the wrong way round - very effective.

Yaseen - Year 1

Yaseen's first picture uses a two tone effect to show both positive and negative space. His second picture is very effective as the black and white circles give the impression of a hole that his sea creature is disappearing into. Finally his volcano picture makes excellent use of stripes and other patterns.

Klaudia - Kittiwake

Klaudia has used the iconic Two Tone black and white checkerboard pattern (which she  carefully drew feehand) in creating this wonderful cat. We love the fact that Klaudia manages to get cats into all kinds of different art work.

Klaudia's Mum

Klaudia's mum is a big fan of the Two Tone music label and Ska music so wanted to get involved. She created a piece of art from four everyday objects placed in different ways. Can you guess what she used?
She then took some photos of a variety of black and white patterned objects in the house.

Shoaib - Nursery

Once again, Shoaib is our youngest Art Clubber. In his brilliant two tone picture, he has practised his cutting and sticking skills.
What title would you give his picture?

Ayla - Buzzard

This week Ayla has explored the theme of two tone in a variety of ways. First she completed an excellent symmetrical picture of a cat. Then she used black bin bags and a black felt pen to create this unique heart picture. Finally she went into her garden and took photos in black and white to see their effect.

Ms Harding

Ms Harding likes doodling and cats, so decided to combine the two in her zentangle picture. Only trouble is she forgot the whiskers!!

Rose

This week Rose completed a two tone striped picture where she had to really concentrate on colouring the inside of her water droplets differently to the outside.
She then created an exploding collage. What does it remind you of?

Ms Harris

Ms Harris was inspired by a sunflower that is growing in her garden, so completed this zentangle sunflower by using a felt pen. She said it was very relaxing and calming. Here are two photos of her sunflower. The first one is like the section she did in her zentangle. But the second is the whole sunflower, so after all our terrific two tone we end our exhibition with a big splash of colour!

Thank you once again for getting involved. We'll be back next week with Challenge 18, where you'll all be doing some globetrotting, art as we go on our artistic travels....
