Challenge 4 - Comfort Blanket

Hello again! Thank you to all those who took part in last week's Let The Sunshine In challenge. We've had a lot of positive feedback from any key workers who've seen it. Keep sharing, so more of them get to see it too!

This week as we aren't giving you so long here is a smaller, but very important challenge.

We'd like you each to complete a square which we can virtually stitch together into a giant quilt to show that we are thinking of those people who aren't very well at the moment - it'll be our very own MG Comfort Blanket.

Here's what a normal quilted blanket looks like:

We're going to go for a similar idea, with each off us using a similar sized square, then filling it with our own patterns.

Here's how to get all our squares the same size:

Get an A4 piece of paper

Fold down the top right hand corner, until it lines up with the bottom edge.

Cut off the extra piece of paper, leaving just your folded triangle.

Open it up and you have a square. If we all do this part, we'll be working with the same sized squares. Draw a little border around the edges.

After this it's up to how you want to fill in your square:

  • A big bold shape in the middle
  • A repeated pattern
  • Stripes
  • A flag
  • Different sized shapes - eg: start with a small circle then draw bigger and bigger ones round it until you touch the edge
  • Fill your square with flowers, hearts
  • A giant rainbow

The possibilities are endless.

Here's what we went on to do.
We drew a grid.

Inside each square in the grid we put a different shape or pattern in a sequence.

Then we coloured it in brightly coloured felt pens, keeping to a colour pattern too & not leaving any white spaces.

Here are some more ideas from Rose, Tahira & Mrs Nazir to inspire you:

When you have finished if you place your square on a flat surface and take a photo of it, like this one above, it will be easier for us to crop them before we 'stitch' them all together for our very own Comfort Blanket.

As usual please send your photos to:

Good Luck!

Here are some other ideas for you to
think about from the MG Art Archives!

You could also think about the patterns in fabrics & use these as inspiration for your square. For example:

Remember you don't have to do a grid type pattern, but if you decide to you can do bigger grids. Here's what Year 3 did a few years ago.

They investigated Patterns In Nature

They practised drawing them.

Then used their ideas to design a simple pattern picture, using their version of the 5 patterns in nature as motifs.

In some classes they drew the outlines of their patterns in chalk, filled them in with wax crayons and then put an ink wash over the top.

Meanwhile, Year 2 looked at Aboriginal Raak pictures as part of their Australia topic. For those they used hatching and cross hatching in different directions to create patterns.

Finally Year 4 did some Zentagles of their initials. For this they split up their shape into different areas, doing different patterns in each, using only a black felt pen.

These are just a few ideas - we're sure you have plenty of your own. Enjoy!
