Victorian Art & Craft

To finish off their work inspired by their topic on Florence Nightingale & Mary Seacole, Year 2 briefly looked at some of the popular Art and Crafts that existed when both women were alive.

We had a mini JMW Turner exhibition in school, where we learnt about his life and discussed some of his key paintings.

These were the paintings we looked at, discussing which ones we liked and why; which ones made us feel scared, happy, calm and again why.

After becoming Art Detectives we also discovered recurring themes in his pictures, particularly his interest in and how he painted skies and clouds.
So it was time to do a bit of cloud spotting for ourselves!

Giant turtle?

Darth Vadar mask?

 A map of England?

A rabbit ho;ding out his paw?

We're all going to observe skies more closely in the future....

While JMW Turner was perhaps the most famous painter of the day, decoupage was a very popular craft activity in Victorian times.

We looked at examples of decoupage, learnt where the name came from and how to do it, before starting our very own decoupage Easter eggs, using typical Victorian images.
