Wondrous Wandjinis!

Last week Year 2 began their new topic - Australia. In Art we started by looking at Aboriginal rock art, in particular the cave and rock paintings of Wandjini found in the North-West of Australia.

We started by drawing our own Wandjinis on rough paper, making sure we had shown all the different types of weather that the Aboriginal people thought that they conjured up.

We then thought bough the colours of their surroundings and how they would create paint using natural materials such as ground up rocks and charcoal.

We tried to use the same type of colours ourselves using soft pastels, chalk and charcoal as we created our own Wandjini.

We pulled out our pastel outlines to get more of a stencil effect.

After we had added all the elements that symbolised the weather, some of us added some background details and finally applied some charcoal or darker brown pastel to make it look as though our pictures were on rock or a cave wall. Here are some of our finished ones, all now displayed in our classrooms.
