Watch Out Ladybirds About!

The Bad Tempered Ladybird by Eric Carle kicked off Year 1's new Minibeast Art work.

It all started on South Site in Kinglet class where the children practised drawing ladybirds (to make the bad tempered ladybird a little less bad tempered!)

We then used oil pastels to shade some grass at the bottom of a photocopied, blue wash background. We tried to make our blades of grass large, so our ladybirds would be in proportion. We also tried to blend our colours (dark green, light green, yellow) to make our grass more interesting and not just one block of colour.
Then we used the end of a cork to print the ladybirds bodies in red paint. While that dried, we listened to the story of The Bad Tempered Ladybird before using a black pen to put the details on our ladybirds.

A few days later, the Bad Tempered Ladybird arrived on North Site and visited Kestrel, Kingfisher and Kittiwake.
We started off playing the Doodlebug game, where we changed some doodles into minibeasts.

Like, Kinglet they had a go at drawing ladybirds.

Even adults love drawing ladybirds!

Then they also created their own ladybird scenes, trying to get outr ladybirds going in all different directions.....but some just loved going straight up, racing into the sky!

Watch out when you come to Parents Evenings - there are LOTS of ladybirds flying about the Year 1 rooms!
