Attack!

Year 4 have just started their new topic - The Anglo Saxons. In Art we began by looking at the Sutton Hoo treasures and what it told us about the Anglo Saxons and especially their designs.

We focused particularly on the helmet that was found.

We drew the other half of it in our sketchbooks, looking carefully at all it's intricate designs.

The following week we created our own replicas of the helmet by folding tin foil over thick cardboard and etching our patterns onto it. Some of us tried to emulate the original while others created our own designs. Finally we used a gold and black sharpie to make certain areas (the nose, mouth and eyes) stand out.

They were tricky to photograph and capture our true craftsman(woman)ship! Eventually we displayed them in a darkened room, like real artefacts are in a museum.
