Brrrrrrrr....Winter Is Coming!

As it turns a little chillier, Year 1 focused on winter trees this week. We linked this with looking at Andy Goldsworthy's use of reflections in his work.

First we practised drawing our v-trees from last week. We're REALLY good at this!

Then we looked at some of Andy Goldsworthy and other artists use of refections.

After that we headed into the hall. We took it in turns to create mini sculptures out of different materials and see their reflections in water. Sadly it was a dull day, so as we stayed inside and used torches instead of natural light, we creating more shadows than reflections! Until some of us added some mirrors to the mix! We then took some pictures on our iPads.

Others made shapes with cubes and looked at what happened when they were reflected in a mirror

We all created our own refection paintings.
First we folded our paper in half, then we sponged a wintry sky about the fold using purple, blue and white paint. We dipped the edges of small pieces of cardboard into black paint to create our trees, using the idea of a v-tree. We worked quite quickly, so our paint didn't dry. Finally we folded our paper and pressed hard, so that when we opened it we had a reflection of our scenes on the other side.

When we opened them up we got some great wintry pictures of trees reflected in water. Simple, but very effective.
The Stickman loved them!!
