Masks and Modigliani

Year 3 have just finished learning all about Modigliani and how masks influenced his way of drawing portraits.

As a warm up we tried drawing all different shaped faces.

Then we got acquainted with Modigliani's work, comparing it to some African masks.

By the end of our investigations, this is what we thought about Modigliani:

Then like Modigliani himself, (who did up to 100 sketches a day!), we practised sketching both masks and some of his famous portraits in our sketchbooks.

The following week, we chose our favourite Modigliani portrait and created our own versions using oil pastels.

Wren Class on South Site went one step further and created their own self portraits in the style of Modigliani.

Finally, we returned to masks and created some symmetrical ones of our own!
