We focused on some amazing cave paintings discovered in France.
Having looked at them and discussed what they painted and why, we tried some of our own - sponging our backgrounds to give a cave wall texture/colour, we then used chalk and charcoal to draw our simple pictures, or draw round our hands: smudging it outwards a little to get a better effect.
We then thought about HOW they created Prehistoric Paint as they couldn't just pop to B & Q! We made our own paint by collecting different coloured soil, sieving it so we got rid of any bits of stone or grass. We then mashed it up using a spoon so it was nice and fine. We added a spoonful of vegetable fat, (in the Stone Age they would have used animal fat), mixing it into a thick paste, which we applied to our paper using our fingers.
It was very messy being a Prehistoric painter!!
To finish off our topic we jumped from the Stone Age to modern times, looking at the influence of prehistoric art on the artist Keith Haring - his simple outline figures and his use of stencils in his grafitti art.
Here are some of our first Keith Haring style pictures as we get acquainted with his work.
I love the idea of making your own paint. Great artwork as usual!
