First they completed the other side of the picture in charcoal and chalk. Some of them really 'focused' on getting the eyes right by adding some extra white chalk to give a reflection effect.
After that they tried some charcoal and chalk portraits of their own, again based on the same picture. Some chose to put lace in her hair, others not. But all tried very hard to remember the proportions of the face.
