Year 3 finished off their Roman topic by looking at how mosaics were created, looking at the popular themes in Roman mosaics and then becoming mosaic makers themselves.
We started by creating a simple border, using paper instead of stone tiles and glue instead of plaster. However.just like the traditional mosaic makers, we applied the glue to a small area, before moving on to the next part to ensure it didn't dry up too quickly.
We then drew a simple. large design in the middle.
We chose a variety of designs from Roman artefacts like swords, sheds or daggers to everyday objects like fruits and flowers, to more modern objects we liked such as Pikachu!
They took quite a while as we had to cut down our paper tiles to ensure all the gaps were filled. Some of us cut down some black tiles to outline our subject so that it really stood out against out background.
Finally we took over one of the corridor displays to display some of our finished mosaics!
Meanwhile on South Site we had a go with some real stone tiles, which proved VERY difficult to cut and shape!
